G.I. Modified Hill People Gear Pocket Sling

Idea: Beta-TNT (Webmaster)

Several years ago, I assembled numerous nylons to make a compact hydration pouch suitable for standalone use. To enhance its functionality, I utilized a Hill People Gear Pocket Sling, which proved to be a resounding success. The official description of Pocket Sling is following:

The Pocket Sling will attach to most of our pockets and small packs to convert them into sling bags. The Pocket Sling is made out of 500d Cordura and 1/4th inch foam. It attaches using 3 ITW “Grimlocks”, which connect to the webbing tabs on the appropriate pocket. The sling can be set up for left or right shoulder carry by moving the repair-style side release buckle to the corresponding webbing tab on the sling. It also comes with two 3-bar sliders to create loops out of the shoulder harness attachement points on the Tarahumara or Junction.

Also, I tried ordinary shoulder straps on it, but it’s awful, too complicate for such a small pack.

With a small custom part I made, the Pocket Sling works perfect on my LBX-0306 Mini MAP. However, there is a minor issue: the Pocket Sling has two webbing tabs designed for left-handed or right-handed strap configurations. I had hoped to use the unused tab as a connection point for a stabilizer strap, but its angle doesn’t allow it. So I want to improve it.

The idea is quite simple: just replace those two webbing tabs with a 38mm D ring.

After the modification. I removed the webbing tabs and sewn a 38mm D ring w/ glide in place.

Now we have to find another way to connect the strap to the D-ring. In fact I designed a small “patch” for the “Dynamic Load Linkage” (DLL) System I designed. It’s a small webbing ring with a rectangular ring on it. It can be used any ring which has same width or wider, converting the host ring to a webbing tab. Maybe you say “why bother doing this, the original design has webbing tabs”. The key is, the “patch” can slide or rotate on the ring, and the host ring still has room to connect a stabilizer strap.

A rect ring with a webbing tab, very simple.

With this little patch, it’s suitable for ordinary straps with replacement buckle.

A few days ago, I stumbled upon a SPEC-OPS Brand Wolf Hook Single Point Sling hidden away in my gear stockpile. The sling is originally designed as a lanyard to connect a rifle to LBE gear, I realized that it was an ideal fit for the Pocket Sling I had modified, with its length and connection method perfectly suited.

Still, the stabilizer strap is still functional.

As to the other end, there is a blank panel with nothing. What a waste!

Why not add some PALS to it?

I believe the designer has the same idea, maybe for the sake of low profile, the designer chooses to leave it blank.

That’s all. Thanks for reading.
