Joint Service General Purpose Mask (JSGPM)
History
The Joint Service General Purpose Mask system is being developed to replace the M40/M42 series of masks, mask carrier and accessories for the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps ground and combat vehicle operations and the MCU-2/P series of masks for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy ground and ship applications. Additionally, The JSGPM will replace the M17A2 mask used by the U.S. Air Force. The JSGPM system will be designed to provide 24 hours of protection, lower the weight and bulk, and improve overall mission performance of the wearer. The mask components will be configured to reduce the overall profile of the mask and to allow for improved integration with future soldier systems. The program will target the lowest possible life cycle cost and will be supported through a joint logistic system.
The Joint Service General Purpose Mask development program consists of a 3 year 6.4 Program Definition and Risk Reduction (PDRR) phase and a 3 year 6.5 Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase. The 6.4 PDRR phase will end with a Milestone II In-Process Review (IPR) currently planned for September 2001. The EMD phase will begin in October 2001 and end with a Milestone III IPR in September 2004 with Type Classification of the item(s). Development is followed by a 10 year production phase with a First Unit Equipped (FUE) in September 2006. A detailed program structure for the JSGPM program will comprise a majority of the JSGPM life cycle carrying the program from the PDRR phase through production and Contractor Logistics Support (CLS). Decision nodes, which coincide with the milestone decisions, will be incorporated into the contract to determine if options will be exercised to proceed to the next phase.
Current
The Joint Service General Purpose Mask (JSGPM) is a lightweight, protective mask system incorporating state-of-the-art technology to protect U.S. Joint forces from actual or anticipated threats. There are two variants: The M-50 for ground and shipboard personnel and the M-51 for armored combat vehicle crewman. The JSGPM provides:
- 24 hours of above-the-neck protection from CB agents and radioactive particles
- Head-eye-respiratory protection against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats (including toxic industrial materials)
- Flame resistant Hood for M-51 (Combat Vehicle Version)
- Improved CB protection
- Improved compatibility with current and emerging CB garments
- Improved reliability, improved comfort
- Enhanced field of view (greater than or equal to 80 percent)
- Lower breathing resistance (less than or equal to 30 millimeter of water)
- Reduced weight/bulk
- Improved drinking system design
- Improved mask carrier system
The JSGPM is interoperable with existing legacy and commercial radio systems, while ensuring future operation with the next generation of communications equipment. The mask system replaces the M40/M42 series of field protective masks for the Army and Marine Corps ground and combat vehicle operations, as well as the MCU-2/P series of protective masks for Air Force and Navy shore-based and shipboard applications.
This mask is currently being fielded to all four Services – a first in the history of development and fielding.
