The Assault Vest System (AVS) provides the individual Marine with ballistic protection and/or load bearing capabilities necessary for conducting Close Quarters Battle (CQB) missions. The AVS is comprised of three major items. These items are the Assault Body Armor, Ballistic Plate Insert, and Assault Load Bearing Vest.

The Assault Body Armor component of the AVS exceeds the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Standards for Type IIIA by providing protection from multiple impacts of steel-jacketed 9mm, 123 gr. rounds traveling at 1,400 fps and all lesser threats.
The Assault Body Armor is comprised of Body Armor Ballistic Panel, the Body Armor Outershell, the Groin Protector Ballistic Panel, and the Groin Protector Outershell. Together, they provide ballistic protection against munitions likely to be encountered by Marines conducting CQB DA/IHR missions including steel jacketed rounds fired by sub-machine gun style weapons. The ballistic panels are contained in a waterproof nylon carrier that may be removed for inspection and cleaning.
The Assault Body Armor is designed for use with the Load Bearing Vest. The Groin Protector Ballistic Panel and the Outershell is one size fits all. One each of the items above is provided with each AVS.

The Ballistic Plate Insert, Ceramic Tile component of the AVS increases vital organ protection to exceed NIJ standards of Type IV by providing protection from multiple impacts of 30-06 M-2, 165 gr. (Armor Piercing rounds), traveling at 2,847 fps and all lesser threats. The Ballistic Plate Insert, Ceramic Tiles are inserted into pockets in the Outershell of the Assault Body Armor and are a one size fits all.

The Assault Load Bearing Vest provides a means of carrying mission equipment that allows evenly distributing loads. The modular design allows use of different pouches in varying locations to adapt to different assigned tasks, weapons, equipment and left or right handed individuals. May be worn over the Assault Body Armor. A quick-release feature allows rapid removal. It accepts a day pack in addition to a variety of ammunition, communications and utility pouches. Two accessory loops on the back are capable for carrying a 10 pound sledge hammer or hooligan tool. A drag handle is located on the back of the vest near the neck to assist in moving incapacitated Marines. Water resistant. Color olive drab. The Assault Load Bearing Vest is available in one size which can be adjusted to used with eight different of the Assault Body Armor.
The Assault Load Bearing Vest component of the AVS is designed for mounting modular/interchangeable pouches for pistol/SMG magazines, shotgun rounds, gas/smoke canisters, etc.

The Day Pack is designed for use with the Assault Vest System. Attaches high on the back of the vest with four non-metallic quick-release snaps located on each of the for corners. The Day Pack and its attachment point have been tested to support a load of 30 pounds.
The Day Pack has one small and one large internal pocket. Two external pockets are located on the right and left side of the pack, The neck of the pack is protected with a waterproof flap that is closed by an elastic draw string. All flaps are secured with adjustable non-metallic quick-release fasteners. Color olive drab.
