Enhanced Small-Arms Protective Insert (E-SAPI) Plate

Protective Level: NIJ IV, shown set date Jan, 2008

Overview: The Enhanced Small Arms Protective Insert (ESAPI) replaced the Small Arms Protective Insert (SAPI) for training and operations. The ESAPI protects the Marine’s vital areas on the torso (front and back). When the ESAPI is used in conjunction with the vest’s soft armor inserts, it provides additional protection from rifle-fired threats, while minimizing back face deformation. ESAPI plates must undergo serviceability evaluation and have a passed Non-Destructive Test Evaluation (NDTE) label affixed to be authorized for retention and use.

Features: ESAPI consists of a ceramic composite outer strike face with laminated composite backing, and covered with a rubber, plastic, or nylon cover. ESAPIs can be removed from the Improved Modular Tactical Vest (IMTV)/Plate Carrier (PC), allowing commanders to increase/decrease protection based on the threat. Contoured to fit the individual, plates are interchangeable between the front and back sides of the IMTV or PC. The ESAPI covers a Marine’s vital organs and can withstand multiple hits.
